Frequently Asked Questions

Trauma is more than just a difficult experience — it is an overwhelming event or series of events that disrupt the body’s natural balance and regulation, leaving a lasting impact on the nervous system. Whether it stems from a single incident or repeated exposure, trauma affects each person differently, often in deeply personal and physiological ways.
Trauma becomes stored in the body, showing up as a range of emotional and physical symptoms. These may include feelings of helplessness, chronic fatigue, sleep disturbances, hypervigilance, avoidance, difficulty trusting others, numbness, gastrointestinal issues, cardiovascular concerns, and deep-seated guilt or shame. Over time, these symptoms can impair daily functioning and diminish an individual’s overall sense of safety, connection, and well-being.

The Window of Capacity is also commonly referred to as the Window of Tolerance, which is considered to be the optimal zone of arousal for the nervous system, from which a person can function and respond to stress effectively. Trauma can narrow the window of tolerance, making it harder for someone to stay in that balanced zone of emotional regulation. This happens because trauma over activates the nervous system, making it more reactive and less flexible. The brain and body stay on high alert (hyperarousal) interpreting the world as unsafe even when it isn’t or can get caught in numbness, disassociation, freeze (hypoarousal). Healing from trauma often involves re-expanding the window, so a person can better tolerate a wider range of emotions and experiences without becoming overwhelmed or shutting down.

In order to gain the most benefit from a therapy session I encourage you to come with as much openness, honesty and self-awareness as you are able to, so we can work in tandem, to support you in gaining relief.
You will be provided with options for between session integration practices, including (journaling, breathing techniques, mindfulness and compassion practices) which you are encouraged to use, to promote neuroplasticity (brain’s ability to form new neural connections), and improve your emotional health.
